A practical hospital-to-mortuary transport layer

The transport desk confirms the hospital or clinic collection point, the receiving mortuary, the instructing organisation, the requested timing, the receiving contact and the documentation status. The vehicle is then prepared for a direct refrigerated transfer and the receiving party signs the handover record at delivery.

This service is intended for funeral parlours, hospitals, mortuaries, insurers and authorised repatriation coordinators. Families may contact us for guidance, but an authorised provider and facility release process must be in place before transport can be accepted.

What actually holds a transfer up

Hospital-to-mortuary transport is rarely delayed by the vehicle. In practice two things decide whether a transfer happens this afternoon or tomorrow morning, and neither of them is distance.

• The release at the collection end. Until the hospital or clinic has completed its release process and the authorised instructing party has confirmed it, there is nothing for us to collect. We can be staged and ready, but we cannot start the clock.
• The receiving end being able to accept. A mortuary or funeral parlour that cannot take a delivery at 22:00 sets the timing regardless of how fast the route is. Confirming the receiving contact early is the single biggest thing that speeds a transfer up.
• Where the case sits. An unnatural or unexplained death goes to a state facility under the Forensic Pathology Service, and that process governs timing entirely. We have no role in it and cannot influence it.

Telling us the documentation status honestly on the first call, including when something is still pending, is more useful than an optimistic timeline. It lets dispatch give a realistic window instead of a hopeful one.

Hospital and clinic collections reach us from funeral parlours and undertakers acting for a family, from mortuaries arranging an onward transfer, from hospital administration where an authorised provider is already appointed, and from insurers and repatriation coordinators managing a case.

Families sometimes contact us directly, and we are happy to explain how the process works. But the transport itself still needs an authorised instructing provider and a completed facility release before it can be accepted. We cannot substitute for either.
